THE MILLENNIUM AND THE ENGLISH CURRICULUM SERIES (2nd SEMINAR)
Speaker: Professor Gunther Kreiss, Institute of Education, University of London. Title: Literacy or Literacies: Thoughts on an Agenda for the Day after Tomorrow. Date: Tuesday, 19th March 1996. Venue: The Taylor Room, John Adams Hall, 15-23 Endsleigh Street, London, WC1H ODP (nearest tube: Euston Square, Russell Square; buses: 73 and 10) Time: 17:00 - 18:30hrs. This is the second seminar, following a very successful and over-subscribed first seminar, delivered by Professor Brian Cox on The Future of the English Curriculum on 4th October 1995. Professor Kreiss examines the issue of literacy, as traditionally perceived, against a background of the magnitude and shift of tectonic change, where the written word is displaced by the medium of visual images in many areas of public communications. His argument centres on six linked themes: present development; future needs, literacy, identity and social futures; literacy and technology, literacy and economy; literacy curriculum and new sites of education. Target Group: Primary and Secondary English teachers and specialist teachers. Convenor: Ming Tsow. Organiser: Bilingualism and Languages Network (BLN) an independent and non-profit making Language(s) Forum. Format: Professor Kreiss will give a talk for 40 minutes followed by discussion. You are welcome to submit questions with the booking form, or hand in during registration. Early booking with payment is highly recommended to avoid disappointment.
