Professor Kreiss examines the issue of literacy, as traditionally perceived, against a background of the magnitude and shift of tectonic change, where the written word is displaced by the medium of visual images in many areas of public communications. His argument centres on six linked themes: present development; future needs, literacy, identity and social futures; literacy and technology, literacy and economy; literacy curriculum and new sites of education.
